What is an EPD – and why does it matter?

At Ecolean, we believe that transparency and accountability are essential in driving environmental progress. One of the key tools for achieving this is the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) – a standardized way to report the environmental impact of our products throughout their life cycle.

What is an EPD?

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is an independently verified document that communicates objective, comparable, and third-party-verified data about the environmental performance of a product. It provides a comprehensive view based on a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and gives manufacturers the ability to openly share verified data about their products’ sustainability performance, both the strengths and the challenges, based on internationally accepted standards.

The role of PCRs in EPDs

Every EPD is based on a Product Category Rule (PCR) – a set of guidelines that ensures consistency in how similar products are assessed and reported. PCRs define what data should be included and how the life cycle impacts should be calculated and presented.

Before a new or updated PCR can be finalized, it goes through an open consultation process, where stakeholders are invited to review and provide feedback. This collaborative approach strengthens the quality and relevance of the final standard.

Contributing to a more transparent industry

We are pleased to share that Ecolean’s updated PCR for filling and packaging machines for liquid food is now available for public consultation via the International EPD System.

This is an important step in refining how we – and the wider industry – measure and communicate the environmental impact of our equipment. We invite all interested stakeholders to review the draft and contribute with insights and suggestions.
