Ecolean’s lightweight packaging solutions have received global recognition as one of the winners in the prestigious WorldStar Packaging Awards 2021 announced by the World Packaging Organisation (WPO). Ecolean won the category of ‘Beverage’ for its Ecolean® Air packaging together with Australian customer Bannister Downs Dairy’s flavoured beverages.
The WorldStar showcases packaging innovation and technology with a focus on sustainability, product protection and end-user convenience, and is the most prestigious packaging award globally. The award marks Ecolean’s third WorldStar recognition to date. “The submissions were, again, of a significantly high standard, and to note was how well the submissions in general reflected the focus of packaging with sustainability in mind. Also of interest was the number of clever and unique ideas,” says Pierre Pienaar, President of WPO.

The Ecolean® Air package has unique consumer convenience benefits and a clear sustainability profile compared to other package types for liquid food. Being 50-60% lighter ensures reductions throughout the life cycle of the package to minimise the environmental impact of packaging for food producers all over the world. This ensures less raw material used, less impacts through material production and transport without compromising on consumer convenience and high food safety.

This year, the International judging panel was composed of 33 judges from 33 packaging associations, members of WPO, who judged 345 packaging projects, from 35 countries. The winners for the special categories – President’s Award, Sustainability Award, Marketing Award and Packaging that Saves Food Award – will be announced during a virtual WorldStar Ceremony that will take place in May 2021.
