COMPARE PRODUCTS
The EPD system makes it possible to compare products from different suppliers, by using defined system boundaries. Request EPDs from different suppliers if you want to be able to make a fair environmental comparision between different packaging types.
The results are taken from Ecolean Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) for packages for chilled and ambient distribution. The EPDs follow the Product Category Rules (PCR) for 2017-05 Closable Flexible Plastic Packaging v1.11 as well as the principles and procedures of ISO 14025:2006. Ecolean’s EPD documents are independently verified and registered based on verified life-cycle assessment (LCA according ISO 14040 and 14044) data in accordance with the International EPD®System.
The impact from raw materials is equal to the upstream process in the EPDs and include all production processes for raw materials used in the packaging production and raw materials for transport packaging.
The result for the Ecolean production is equal to the core process as described in the EPD. The result include impact from transportation of raw materials to the Ecolean production site, manufacturing of the ready-to-fill packages, wound on reels. The reels are covered by plastic wrapping and placed on wooden pallets. The core process also includes waste treatment for production waste and impacts due to the production of electricity and fuels used in the production process. The production of Ecolean packages (primary packaging) is located in Helsingborg, Sweden.
For full environmental data and more detailed description of the studied system please see the Ecolean Environmental Product Declarations at The International EPD® System website:
The climate impact assessment includes emissions and removals of greenhouse gases arising from fossil sources, biogenic sources, and direct land use change. According to the regulations of the EPD system, four GWP indicators are declared, which differentiates greenhouse gases depending on their origin: GWP-fossil, GWP-biogenic, GWP-land use and land use change (luc), and GWP-TOTAL (the sum of the other three GWP indicators). The first set of Ecolean EPDs were created using the previous regulations of the EPD system that only covered GWP-fossil.
The Environmental Profiles characterisation model is based on factors developed by the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Factors are expressed as Global Warming Potential over the time horizon of 100 years (GWP100), measured in the reference unit, kg CO2 equivalent.

By using chalk (dolomite), a natural mineral, as a filler, the lightweight Ecolean package uses a lower amount of plastics, which reduces the environmental impact.
Acidic gases such as sulphur dioxide (SO2) react with water in the atmosphere to form acid precipitation – commonly refered to as ”acid rain”, in an acid deposition process. When this rain falls, often a considerable distance from the original source to the gas, it causes ecosystem impairment of varying degree, depending upon the nature of the landscape’s ecosystems. Gases that cause acid deposition include ammonia, nitrogen oxides and sulphur oxides.

EUTROPHICATION POTENTIAL (EP)
(g PO4 eq)
Nitrates and phosphates are essential for life, nevertheless heightened concentrations or excess levels in bodies of water can encourage excessive growth of algae and reduce the oxygen levels in the water. Eutrophication can therefore be classified as the over-enrichment of water courses. Its occurrence can lead to harm to ecosystems, increasing mortality of aquatic fauna and flora, and to loss of species dependent upon low-nutrient environments. Emissions of ammonia, nitrates, nitrogen oxides and phosphorous to air or water all have an impact on eutrophication.
×
PHOTOCHEMICAL OZONE CREATION POTENTIAL (POCP)
(g NMVOC eq)
In atmospheres containing nitrogen oxides (NOx, a common pollutant) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), ozone can be formed via the presence of sunlight. Although ozone is critical in the high atmosphere to protect against ultraviolet (UV) light, low level ozone is implicated in impacts as diverse as crop damage and increased incidence of asthma and other respiratory ailments.
